This week Mr Field will be undertaking whole school assemblies and will be raising awareness of Holocaust Memorial Day  with a special assembly dedicated to remembering the victims of the Holocaust and promoting awareness of the consequences of prejudice and discrimination. The event marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp, and served as a powerful reminder of the importance of tolerance and human rights.

Holocaust Memorial Day has been commemorated in the United Kingdom since 2000 and is recognised internationally as a day of remembrance. It highlights the deaths of  over six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, as well as millions of others who suffered under Nazi persecution, including those of different faiths, different sexualities, those less able-bodies and their allies. The day also reflects on more recent genocides and mass atrocities in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur, emphasising the ongoing need to learn from history.

At Hornsey School for Girls, the activities within the curriculum are designed to foster understanding among students about the dangers of unchecked hatred and discrimination. This educational approach underlines the significance of Holocaust education not only as a historical lesson but as a vital tool for recognising and challenging prejudice in today’s society.
