All roads lead to Munich!
Year 9 and 10 students on an educational STEM trip to Munich from 13–19 June, offering hands-on learning and cultural experiences designed to inspire future scientists and engineers. The visit has so far combined interactive museum exhibits, problem-solving activities, a day in a german school, and opportunities to develop independence and teamwork abroad.
The group spent a day at the Deutsches Museum, where students spent about three hours exploring a wide range of interactive STEM exhibits. Pupils engaged in practical challenges and demonstrations, including a red cabbage chemistry test, a visual demonstration of the Earth’s rotation, and a digital simulation that illustrated how a slipped disc occurs. They've also explored aeronautical displays, examined plane and engine designs, been on a flight simulator, and enjoyed the museum’s miniature train displays.
Highlights included an up-close encounter with the periodic table, hands-on music-making exhibits and a thought-provoking session on robotics that referenced Isaac Asimov’s 1950 "Three Laws of Robotics" and their influence on modern robot development. The students also attended a presentation about sound delivered in German (!), providing a cross-curricular language and science experience, before finishing with a visit to the museum shop.
Outside the museum, the pupils practised practical life skills and local navigation. Year 10 students led the group to a nearby bakery for a snack and later dined together at a range of different restarants after having sampled the Augustiner-Keller the previous day. The party arrived promptly for an 18:30 reservation, learning first-hand about local cultural norms around punctuality while engaging in a reflective discussion comparing wartime and contemporary experiences.
Back at the hotel the group combined study with social time, holding a revision session while watching a Germany World Cup match.
Spirits remained high and staff reported strong engagement across the visit.
With thanks to Ms Aflobai and Ms Dacres for organising and taking the trip and our students for fully embracing the experiences on offer.
