BHM - Dig Deeper, Look Closer, Think bigger!
This week our assemblies have been led and planned by Ms Obeng with musical accompaniment from Ms Munson, who introduced students to the music of Lead Belly with some excellent audience participation. This year’s theme, “Honouring Our Communities,” invites us to recognise the individuals whose everyday contributions shape, support and sustain Black life across the United Kingdom.
Black History Month 2026 invites us to look more closely at something often taken for granted — the communities that shape, support and sustain us.
This theme is not simply about place or postcode. It is about people.Their work may not always be recorded, but it is felt — in relationships, in support systems, and in the spaces where people find belonging.
Across Britain, there are individuals whose contributions are part of everyday life, yet too often go unseen. Volunteers who give their time without expectation. Teachers who shape futures beyond the classroom. Nurses and carers who offer dignity and compassion. Community leaders who bring people together, often without recognition.
These are the people who help to hold our communities together, and we are delighted that our staff body reflects a global outlook and heritages.
Ms Obeng's assembly forms the basis of the pastoral activities for form tutors across the year groups. The LRC has a special section on books and pamphlets related to Black History Month, and there are posters across the school showing community impact of black people across all walks of life and industries with short biographies to educate and inform.
Our caterers will be ensuring a range of foods from different countries are on show, and there will be 3 days of activities taking place at lunchtime to explore what Black History means in culture and community.
Alongside our focus on the impact of Black Pioneers on our communities and world, we will also be celebrating HSG Culture Day on the 16th October. In a world increasingly highlighting differences, Culture Day is a safe space to share our histories, our relationships and challenge discrimination.
